PS/IS 128Q is a new school of approximately 100,000 s.f. and occupying an entire city block in the Middle Village area of Queens. The school has a capacity of 648 students. Offering a full PS/IS academic program on four floors and a full cellar level the school has a kitchen cafeteria, two storey auditorium and dance studio a gymnasium and a full complement of academic classrooms. The new school building ocupies the west portion of the site while the eastern section is reseved for a kindergarten playground which is separated from the I.S playground with its basketball courts and baseball diamond. Purcell Architects were design architects for this project which has been constructed under the New York City School Construction Authority design build program. The school was completed and occupied as scheduled on September 2010.
Entrances are provided at various locations around the site and all lead into a central lobby area with a central security desk located at this focal point for good visibility of all entrance exits.
The main building façade on Juniper Valley Road is designed with two tone masonry and cast stone elements emphasizing the major entrances. East of the new building is a play yard. The yard is open to the east and south and offers a good opportunity to create a cheerful space for the student’s playground. Within this area the children have access to a separated kindergarten play area which is surrounded with landscaped spaces.
