The addition and renovation to PS 20 in Queens comprises of a 45,000 sq. ft. addition and the renovation of approximately 100,000 square feet. This project was awarded the first place in the annual Public building award in the Borough of Queens. The addition includes a kitchen and dining area at the lower level, twelve kindergarten classrooms on the first level, computer and science laboratories and additional standard classrooms. The addition was located to provide for a connection to the existing building at the ends of the existing corridors. The final configuration encloses a three story high central atrium which is utilized as kindergarten playground. The atrium space was designed with exposed tubular steel trusses, supporting a flat panel metal wall system and sloping standing seam roofing. Completed in August 1996 the new addition opened to twelve classes of Kindergarten children in September. The atrium space with its playground equipment and safety surfaces has proven to be in popular demand.
