Public School 8K

The project is located at 37 Hicks Street, Brooklyn New York, 11201, and is an addition to the existing primary school.

The existing building comprises a basement and three story masonry structure. The basement level is used as the kitchen and cafeteria area, boiler room associated storage rooms and the main utility service areas. First floor level accommodates the main school office function along with an Auditorium, Classrooms and associated support functions. The second and third floors incorporate the remaining student classrooms, library, offices and support functions.

The site measures approximately 169’-0’ x 201’-9’’ with the existing building located at the west side of the site parallel to Hicks Street. The remaining space to the East is currently used as the school playground and the temporary classroom units.

During the early phases of the development of this design we reviewed options for the placement of the new addition. With the placement of the temporary classroom units on the site the available space for any addition was limited to the North East corner along Poplar Street. This location also is the most feasible option for an on grade entrance.

The proposed design is a modern interpretation of the existing building and is sympathetic to the classical elements of the original school. The addition incorporates a defined base detailed with cast stone; the center portion of the new building is defined with cast stone detailing at the sill and head of the windows which are evocative of the cast stone detailing of the existing structure. The new addition will be constructed with a face brick matching the existing material along with cast stone that matches the current limestone elements of the existing building.
